NEA CENTER FOR RACIAL AND SOCIAL JUSTICE (CRSJ): 2024-2026
Interactive prototype
Reimagining how leadership grows from individual journey to collective impact
Explore the story ↘“What is it to dream past your current reality?” — Dr. Robin D.G. Kelley
The question that started everything
what kind of experience would leave them resourced, grounded, connected, and capable of responding to the reality of this moment and beyond?
Grounding
This professional development experience is rooted in two interconnected bodies of thinking that have shaped how we understand change, consciousness, and the roles we play in building something more just.
These are not new ideas, they are part of a long tradition of liberation-centered practice that we are building on.
The context
NEA members are navigating economic pressure, attacks on what can be taught and honored in schools, and the erosion of hard-won protections.
The question is no longer whether learning matters. It is whether our learning infrastructure is strong enough to hold people through this moment and beyond.
Growth at the individual level creates ripple effects across teams, institutions, and the broader education community.
Our observation
The problem was never the quality of what we offer.
The problem was the absence of a through-line.
The process · 2024–2026
Internal stakeholder consultations across the HCR PD team.

2 days visioning workshop in Washington, DC.

Insights translated into tensions and design directions.

The full HCR PD team sees and shapes the emerging model.

From imagining the ecosystem to making it tangible.

What the process revealed
They need to understand where they are entering, what they are carrying, and where they can go next.
Learning must continue through reflection, practice, peer relationships, and a clear way back in.
Roles and circumstances change. The ecosystem must make renewal and re-entry visible, expected, and supported.
Cohorts, affinity spaces, peers, and mentors are not extras. They are the infrastructure that carries learning forward.
The HCR liberatory learning ecosystem journey
Leadership is evolving. It is inherently connected to racial and social justice. This journey explores how to grow consciousness, skills and practice at every phase.
PHASE 0
Discovering, orienting, and understanding that the HCR learning ecosystem exists.
Self-assessment, orientation, and a first connection turn awareness into entry.
The journey is not a ladder.
It is a living loop.
Phase 5 does not end the journey.
It creates the relationships, facilitators, mentors, and entry points that make Phase 0 possible for the next person.
The why behind the ecosystem
Across every role in the NEA ecosystem, member, staff, governance, facilitator, there is a shared identity at the core. What differs are not the values or the vision. What differs is the sphere of influence, the decisions available, and the specific practices required in that context.
Local practice
Names their positionality, reads the system, brings learning back to their local context, and stays in relationship with the work.
Learning spaces
Holds brave space, differentiates across learning levels, and develops the next layer of facilitators.
Decision-making
Uses power intentionally, makes decisions through an equity lens, and creates conditions for others to learn and lead.
Ecosystem infrastructure
Connects learning experiences, listens for patterns, and builds the infrastructure that allows the ecosystem to sustain itself.
The curriculum landscape
What already exists
A rich foundation of learning already exists. The opportunity is to connect it to a coherent journey and intentionally build the missing entry, renewal, and contribution infrastructure.
Current coverage across the journey
An indicative map of where the curriculum is already strongest and where it still needs design.

Critical gap
The immediate need is not more content. It is a sequencing logic and the bridges that turn a menu of offerings into a connected journey.
Explore the curriculum →Who we are becoming
Clear, connected, and powerful enough that members can find their own way toward the light.
